The Marcellus Formation
Black Shales in Pennsylvania and adjacent states

In recent years the Marcellus Black Shale has been recognized as having an
enormous potential for natural gas - well over 100 trillion cubic feet of gas exists
in Pennsylvania alone.  GMRE, Inc. geologists have mapped the Marcellus Formation
in central Pennsylvania, where this and other Black Shales are well exposed at the
surface.  Our database of field data and samples allows us to better characterize
the stratigraphy, mineralogy, and chemistry of Black Shales in the Ordovician and
Devonian parts of the stratigraphic column.
